A Detailed Guide to Implementing Kanban
As lean manufacturing trainers and mentors, we've had the opportunity to visit a lot of facilities and see a lot of companies. Based on our experience, it's rare to find a plant that is mature in its Material Management methods. What's the big deal? Potentially millions of dollars in lost productivity, squandered working capital, misused space and reduced quality.
One of the most common Lean methods to get inventory under control and sustain high levels of inventory accuracy, turnover and availability is Material Kanban. Kanban isn't the only material management tool, but in many cases Kanban is the method of choice. So why isn't Kanban more common? It's not for lack of information...the internet and libraries are full of articles and books. Maybe what we need is a step-by-step method, or a roadmap, of how to Implement Kanban. Here's our top-level map, based on 20 years of implementing Kanban in hundreds of companies.
A set of Action Roadmaps is also available, that explains each of the high-level tasks in detail. The complete set includes 14 detailed flow charts that walk you through the specific steps required for each high level task.
